It has been finalized that English education will be mandatory in elementary schools from 2020. Families with children younger than elementary school age are curious about how things will change. In this article, we will cover how English education at elementary school will change in detail.
English education will start from Grade 3
Currently, English education starts from Grade 5 as an introductory class to get children used to the language. However, from 2020, Japanese students will start learning English from Grade 3.
The curriculum will include writing letters, learning easy greetings and getting used to listening and speaking English.
The goal of the class is to make English learning fun so there will be no grades.
3rd and 4th Grade children will be expected to know how to answer simple English questions.
These classes will be considered the preparation for real English learning in the future.
English will be considered an actual subject from Grade 5
From Grade 5, English will be a subject that students earn grades for just like Japanese language and math.
The goal of the classes will change from having fun with English to studying English as a foreign language.
Students will learn how to read and write in English and also learn grammar and vocabulary. They will also be expected to introduce themselves in English including their opinions and thoughts.
There will be a big focus on speaking skills which is an area that Japanese people are not good at.
Children in Grade 5 and 6 will be learning the English skills that junior high school students in Japan are currently studying.
Exposing children to English before elementary school will become even more important
Grade 3 is when students are focused on learning Japanese reading and writing and remembering Kanji.
Many parents are worried that when the schools add English learning during this period their child will not be able to keep up with his/her studies.
This is why it is important for children to start learning English before they enter elementary school.
