Why is it important for children to have curiosity? How can parents encourage it?

The buds of curiosity in children begin to sprout when they are babies. Curiosity is required not only for everyday life but also for studying, exercising and even playing. How can parents encourage their child’s curiosity? In this article, we will cover the important points to be aware of when encouraging your child to be curious.

子どもの好奇心が大切なのはなぜ? 好奇心を育てる方法とは?

Fostering your child’s curiosity is important for both study and exercise!

When children are curious about the world around them they are more likely to take action. You may hear your child say “I want to go there because it looks fun!” or “I want to learn more about the various types of cars!” when they show interest in them.

Two main types of curiosity exist, “intellectual curiosity” (want to know more about something) and “perceptual curiosity” (want to find out why something happened). Of these, “intellectual curiosity” is of particular importance.

Intellectual curiosity is the source of the power of life

“Intellectual curiosity” arises when someone is interested in learning new things and why things happen. Although this is difficult for babies, when children turn 2 or 3 years old, they begin talking and asking lots of questions which proves that their “intellectual curiosity” is growing.

Having “intellectual curiosity” is not only fun to have, it is also very helpful when problem solving. Children who develop “intellectual curiosity” at a young age are more motivated to learn, exercise and play and often improve quickly. “Intellectual curiosity” is essential to living a long, successful life.

How can parents encourage their child’s curiosity?

Parents and children should play and learn together

“Intellectual curiosity” does not grow when a child shows interest in something but his/her parents do not respond or show little interest. It is important that parents play and research with their child even if they are not interested in the topic. Parents should also make sure to show their children what they are doing so their child gains interest as well. When parents act as a good role model, children will be more likely to become motivated to learn more and try new things.

Allow your child to immerse him/herself in what he/she likes or enjoys

Many parents are worried that their children are only interested in certain things. However, this is not a problem. It is OK for children to have favorite things (like cars, trains, dolls, etc) to show interest in. This curiosity will help them remember vocabulary, characteristics and even use their imagination to come up with different ways to play with them.

It is often said that we become good at things that we enjoy, but this interest also fosters curiosity and motivates us to want to know more. Although it is a good idea to encourage your child to experience many different things, parents should also allow them to follow their interests.

Create an environment where they can relax

Children need to get a good night’s sleep and relax so they are ready to conquer the world and be curious about the things around them.

Children learn and master many things through curiosity. As their curiosity grows, they will be better able to problem solve and work positively.

They also need to be stimulated to foster curiosity. Attending preschool or mommy & me classes, is a great way to encourage your child to try new things and meet new people and foster their curiosity in the world around them.
