In order for us to remember what we have learned, it is important that we take the time to review. If your child is learning English, using the vocabulary he/she learned at home will make it easier for him/her to remember the words. When reviewing, it is important to keep it fun so that your child does not get bored. In this article, we will introduce some tips for parents to use when they are reviewing with their child.
Many people have experienced waking up in the morning having forgotten what they studied the day before. We all forget things so it is important to review what we have learned to imprint the contents in our memory. According to the German psychologist, Ebbinghaus, forget 56% of what they learned within one hour and 74% of what they learned within a day. It is effective to review what you learned the same day, 2-3 days after and 1 week after to keep it in your memory. Even if you try your best to remember what you learned that day without review you will forget most of it. Attending early learning classes is are a great opportunity for children to learn many new things. Let’s make sure to review what they learned at home so they do not forget it all.
When reviewing with your child, let’s avoid explaining the points they found difficult to understand. Let’s encourage our children to explain what they learned on their own which will help them remember. This will also make it easier for parents and teachers to grasp what they understand and what they got wrong. If they are able to explain what they learned on their own then that means that they grasped the concept and remember the main points. It is important for parents and teachers to praise children when they explain correctly and ask them how they remembered it. This will help them feel accomplished and encourage a love of learning.
We recommend that parents play games with their children using the information they learned at early learning classes or school. Singing English songs together is also effective. Children love playing with their parents and it is a fun way for them to review what they learned. Creating your own vocabulary or picture cards and playing with them is also fun. The cards can be used in various games (like memory) to remember English vocabulary. Let’s have our children help make the cards and also come up with games to use them.
Review is important to help remember what we learned. Forcing your child to study is not effective and may end up causing them to dislike learning. So parents should instead find fun ways to review with their child.
